. Course Title: Practical Insights into Knowledge Management This course provides practical insights developed over several years of practicing knowledge management within a major automotive manufacturer. One of the guiding principles proposed in this class is that all businesses are knowledge-based. At issue is whether the businesses’ knowledge is visible, valued, accurate, relevant, shared and really understood. Knowledge Management is not about bringing knowledge to a business but assisting a business in seeing the knowledge all around them. A businesses’ knowledge is held by their executives and employees, and embedded in their processes, products or services. The second guiding principle is viable businesses must be learning centric as well. One of the long-term competitive advantages an organization has is the ability and agility to learn faster than its competitors. For a maturing product or service, the ultimate goal is to achieve first-time capability – applying accurate, relevant, knowledge at the right time in a consistent and repeatable manner to innovate or create desired outcomes. For a developing product or service, the ultimate goal is to learn from the outcome of each new probe or step, not to be risk adverse, but to explore the unknown without reprisal. Within such an enterprise, knowledge and learning is valued, expected, understood, taught, shared, and continuously refreshed. During this course the student will be introduced to knowledge management tools, techniques, processes and strategies. Through discussion, argument and application the student will gain practical insights into Knowledge Management. Wieneke & Wieneke, Inc./Copyright 2008
